My mind has to be completely focused on my own illusions. I never look at other people’s work. I have an obsession with details and pattern. It’s really easy to get colors right. It’s really hard to get black – and neutrals – right.
Black is certainly a color but it’s also an illusion. I am convinced that there can be luxury in simplicity. It’s a philosophy of life. A practice. If you do this, something will change, what will change is that you will change, your life will change, and if you can change you, you can perhaps change the world.
Design is a series of creative choices – it’s a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. I design from instinct. What feels good. What feels right. Working on the details, twisting them and playing with them over the years, but always staying on the same track. I like things simple. I like to be real. My learning process is by eye alone; it’s not at all scientific. For me, art is about learning and about living with people. It’s alive. Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk. There is always the new project, the new opportunity. I like the things around me to be beautiful and slightly dreamy, with a feeling of worldliness. Beauty is perfect in its imperfections, so you just have to go with the imperfections.
